Detailierte Liste der längsten Sperren in der NHL

Zu denken geben sollte, dass von den Spielsperren, die 20 oder mehr Spiele dauerten, 5 in diesem Jahr ausgesprochen werden mussten.

* Lifetime Ban

- Billy Coutu, Boston Bruins: He became the first player banned for life after starting a brawl in Game 4 of the 1927 Stanley Cup final for punching referee Jerry LaFlamme. In October of 1929, the suspension was lifted so Coutu could play in the minor leagues, although he never played in the NHL again. In 1932-33, at the insistence of Montreal Canadiens owner Leo Dandurand, Coutu was reinstated to the NHL.

30 Games

- Chris Simon, NY Islanders: For stepping on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu on Dec. 15. Late in New York's loss to the Penguins, with the Islanders trailing 3-2, Simon drew a match penalty when he pulled out Ruutu's leg with his stick, sending the forward to his knees between the team benches. Simon then stepped on the back of Ruutu's leg with his skate. He was ejected from the game.

25 Games

- Chris Simon, NY Islanders: For hitting Ryan Hollweg in the head with his stick during a game on March 8, 2007. He was assessed a Match Penalty for deliberate injury. He was suspended a minimum of 25 games. If the Islanders do not qualify for the 2007 playoffs, or play fewer than 10 playoff games in the 2007 playoffs, Simon would serve additional games at the start of the 2007-08 regular season. Simon forfeits a minimum of $80,213.90.

- Jesse Boulerice, Philadelphia Flyers: For cross-checking Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler in the head during a game in October 2007. The incident happened in the third period of Philadelphia's 8-2 win. With the Flyers up 7-2 at the time, Boulerice cross-checked Kesler in the face after the Canuck tried to hit Flyers defenceman Randy Jones behind the net. Boulerice has a history of stick violations. He was suspended and charged with assault after decking a player in the Ontario Hockey League a decade ago.

23 Games

- Marty McSorley, Boston Bruins, one year: For knocking out Vancouver's Donald Brashear with a stick-swinging hit in February 2000. He was originally suspended for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs - which turned out to be 23 games, the Bruins did not make the playoffs. The suspension was subsequently extended to one year.

- Gordie Dwyer, Tampa Bay Lightning: For abusing officials and coming out of the penalty box to fight in an exhibition game against the Washington Capitals on Sept. 19 2000.

21 Games

- Dale Hunter, Washington: For a blindside check of Pierre Turgeon of the N.Y. Islanders after a goal in a playoff game in May 1993.

20 Games

- Steve Downie, Philadelphia Flyers: For his hit on Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond in an exhibition game in September 2007. Suspension begins when/if he makes 23 man NHL roster.

- Sean Hill, New York Islanders: For violating the league's performance-enhancing substances program in April 2007, the first to be suspended under the program.

- Tom Lysiak, Chicago Blackhawks: For intentionally tripping a linesman in October, 1983.

- Todd Bertuzzi, Vancouver Canucks (rest of 2004 regular season, 13 games, and playoffs, 7 games): For his sucker-punch on Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Moore on March 8, 2004. He remained suspended throughout the 2004-05 cancelled season and was barred from participating in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and both the 2004 and 2005 IIHF World Championships, as well as from playing in any European professional league. Bertuzzi forfeited a total of $501,926.39 in salary as a result of his suspension.
