J.R.: Rückrücktritt

Mr. Not Nice Guy Jeremy Roenick bleibt.

Nachdem er im Sommer dieses Jahres deutliche Rücktritts-Rauchzeichen in die Medienlandschaft schickte, unterschrieb er etwas überraschend diese Woche einen 1-Jahres-Vertrag mit den San Jose Sharks. Der 37-Jährige Center erzielte in 1'252 NHL-Spielen (18 Saisons) 1'170 Punkte (495-675). Ein grosser Makel schwebt jedoch über diesen grossen Zahlen: Er hat noch nie einen Stanley Cup gewonnen.

"This is not a financial thing for me. I even asked for a bit less. My motivation is to win a Cup. My motivation is to try and gain my respectability as a hockey player back. ...”

Das mit dem Respekt zurückgewinnen könnte schwierig werden, sollte es mit dem Cup nicht klappen. Er gilt als arrogantes Rauhbein und zementierte dieses Image immer wieder mit kernigen Zitaten:

“Yeah, I'm cocky, and I'm arrogant. But that doesn't mean I'm not a nice person. Still, I don't want to be thought of as a nice guy and fun guy to play against. I'd like to be thought of as a talented player, one you're going to have to look out for, offensively and defensively. I want to go out there and put a little question in an opponent's mind, not knowing what I'm going to do next. I don't care if people call me a cheap-shot artist or a pain in the ass to play against.
When my career is over, I want to be known as a warrior, a winner. I don't want people to say it was a pleasure to play with me--or against me."

Nach eher schwierigen Saisons mit den Kings und den Coyotes steht J.R. somit immer noch auf den Eisflächen, die die Welt bedeuten. Mit dem Engagement bei den Sharks ist er nun zudem gut bedient und hat realistische Chancen, tief in die Playoffs vorzustossen. Und sollte es mit dem Stanley Cup nicht klappen, kann er zumindest in den 500-Tore Klub aufgenommen werden. Dazu fehlen ihm nämlich nur noch 5 Tore.
